The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Styling David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer behind many legendary styles associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the light-hued ensembles that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."
Price's death comes less than a month after he unveiled his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he began designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in designing form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "true original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as various looks for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.
