Shoaib Bashir Makes Surprise Selection in England's Test Series Team
England have opted for a twelve-player squad just 48 hours ahead of the opening Test match, with the 22-year-old spinner earning a unexpected spot.
Bashir's selection indicates that the visiting team will delay until the morning of the first Test to determine whether Perth Stadium pitch suit four seamers or the inclusion of a spinner.
Both pace bowlers are included in the selected group, showing there are no doubts about their fast bowler's fitness.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse complete the bowling group, with Carse expected to miss out if the spinner enters the starting XI.
Pitch Factors Favor Seamers
The England coach had been anticipated to choose an all-seam attack on a ground that has staged five previous Tests.
In those matches, 134 wickets have been taken by seamers, with only 40 to spin.
Of those spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has claimed 29, while overseas slow bowlers combined have only eight.
On a ground renowned for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, pledged that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a team loaded with seamers remains the probable decision.
Alternative Choices Considered
Previously there was rumors that the all-rounder could be brought into the side to offer some slow bowling while additionally bolstering the lower order.
However the coach has opted to stick with the young spinner, having said previously that he would be his preferred spinner for the Ashes.
Earlier, Lyon commented on the English spinner as “decent,” saying that “from my perspective, the experienced spinner is still the English best spinner.”
“This is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who haven’t done it in the previous in Australian pitches,” Lyon remarked of spin bowling in matches Down Under.
“I’m not going to let my secrets out so opponents come out and excel out here.”
