Palestine's Diplomatic Envoy to the UK Celebrates Embassy Opening as 'Proof Palestinian Identity Is Indisputable'.

The top Palestinian diplomat to the United Kingdom has declared that the formal opening of the state's embassy in London represents "proof that our identity cannot be erased."

A 'Pivotal' Step Forward

Husam Zomlot described the upgrading of Palestine's mission in Hammersmith, west London, as a "historic" occasion. Addressing attendees at a formal event to mark its new status as an embassy, he stressed: "This represents not just a renaming, and the plaque we will reveal shortly symbolizes far more than protocol."

"This is a new path, reflecting the situation we are living today, a reality that definitively acknowledges, finally, our fundamental entitlement to state sovereignty."

He added that for countless Palestinians in Gaza, the Israeli-occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, in refugee camps and throughout the diaspora, "this building stands as testament that our national character is irrefutable, we as a people cannot be erased, and our right to life cannot be diminished."

Background and Recent Events

The upgrading of the embassy, previously known as the Palestinian general delegation, follows the UK government's policy shift to formally recognize the state of Palestine. This step was framed as an effort to "safeguard the viability of a peaceful two-state framework" in the region.

A flag-raising ceremony held earlier was attended by members of parliament, ambassadors, and hundreds of citizens. The ambassador has previously called for "full safeguards" for the embassy following an event where it was confronted by masked individuals displaying flags. The building's exterior was reportedly marked by adhesive labels with messages backing a foreign military, according to security footage.

Ongoing Anguish Despite Formal Recognition

In his remarks, Zomlot commented that Britain's diplomatic acknowledgment of the Palestinian state was the culmination of "decades of persistent fight," but cautioned that he felt "the shadow that hangs over us" as people in Gaza are "enduring a nightmare."

A vast portion of the territory remains destroyed, with its inhabitants of more than two million souls surviving mostly in improvised dwellings or damaged buildings.

A Young Voice of Aspiration

Monday's ceremony also heard from Obaidah, a 14-year-old Palestinian refugee who was injured during the bombardment of Gaza last year and was flown to the UK for medical treatment.

Sharing his hope to one day become a Palestinian ambassador himself, Obaidah remarked: "Establishing the embassy in the United Kingdom is deeply significant. It is a place where we are seen, where our narratives are heard, and where the dream for justice and dignity endures."
