Eric Adams Plans to Back Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayor's Election
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced his decision to back former Governor Cuomo in the forthcoming mayoral race, despite an extended period of disagreements between the two Democratic figures.
A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism
Only weeks ago, Adams had lashed out at Cuomo, labeling him a “snake and a untruthful person” and alleging of having “a career of marginalizing Black political contenders.” Yet, in a recent development, Mayor Adams changed his position, announcing he now intends to campaign alongside the former governor in communities where he maintains strong support.
“It's essential to mobilize the Black and brown communities that have been affected by urban displacement on how critical this election is,” the mayor commented.
He added, “Residents have seen their rents increase in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been disregarded in those neighborhoods, and I plan to visit to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with organizers and organizations and I will appear with the governor in those areas and get them engaged.”
Election Landscape and Recent Events
The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the competition between the former governor and democratic socialist his main rival, whose growing support has attracted attention globally and represented hopes for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democratic party.
During a recent mayoral debate, both Mamdani and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa stated they would decline Adams’s endorsement if extended.
Earlier this year, Adams had begun his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after facing federal corruption charges which were later dismissed in return for Adams’s cooperation with federal immigration raids across the city.
At an unrelated press conference on the same day, Adams responded to journalists inquiring into the endorsement plan by saying, “Andrew and I will appear together this evening.”
The announcement came a day after the two politicians were spotted sitting courtside together at the New York Knicks’ season opener at the famous arena, which occurred right after a contentious candidate debate.
