Manchester City boss the Catalan coach, who has worked with icons including the Argentine maestro, Iniesta, and Xavi Hernández, has declared that Cherki is one of the most talented individuals he has ever witnessed and believes the winger will adopt the team-first mentality at the Premier League side.
Return from Injury
The 22-year-old, who joined City from Lyon for £30.5m just before the FIFA Club World Cup in June, has made just seven outings up to now. After recovering from a thigh injury, he came on for a five-minute appearance in the success over Everton recently, where he nearly set up a goal for Erling Haaland.
He is heading to face Villarreal where he make his European first appearance in a City shirt.
Guardiola’s Insight
Although urging time, the boss found it hard to articulate Cherki’s abilities, noting that the main question could be how he settles to the system and adapts to performing basic actions effectively.
“Cherki is one of the most outstanding players I’ve witnessed in my career,” stated the manager, puffing out his cheeks. “In terms of skill he is excellent. The challenge is his integration and how he reads play, what the match demands. He played in the intercontinental cup, though he was sidelined. It’s about taking it gradually, yet his ability is undeniable: I believe that most of the time when the play comes to him, the attack becomes more dangerous.
“It’s not necessary for him to try to do spectacular moves; sometimes he just needs play simple football. But he has a special quality. Such as the assist to Haaland against Everton, along with numerous other things he is capable of.
“He’s the type unfazed by stress in possession. He resembles a pickup game star. He gets frustrated – ‘I want the ball’ – when he doesn’t get it, you know. It’s only been a brief period at the club; it requires a bit as you have to play together.”
When asked whether the Frenchman will adapt with the collective spirit, Guardiola responded: “Yes, definitely. Players like him are so instinctive, incredibly bright. They see everything.”
Recognition for González
Guardiola additionally commended the midfielder, who appears set to start in the heart of the park. Rodri has travelled to Villarreal, and is likely to be honoured ahead of the game at the Estadio de la Cerámica, though he misses out due to a muscle injury.
The manager said: “I have the impression that González is improving continuously. We are extremely pleased with his attitude and he will keep getting better. He is refined, thoughtful, a lovely guy. His family should be extremely proud of the man and player he’s grown into. He needs to stay true, yet while competing with elite teammates, you continuously improve. You see how your performance elevates, though Nico has to be himself, for sure.”
City’s Upward Trend
Guardiola also spoke glowingly on the club’s current form. “We put away plenty of strikes, generating lots of chances, and we are giving up little. There have been only eight league games as well as two in European competition, yet I believe that each outing improves upon the previous one and is worse than the upcoming.
“We talk about frequently what we can do better and how to interpret play more effectively. I hold strong belief in the players and I’m aware the individuals are putting in the effort. We are displaying strong shape.”
